The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation between number of previous hospitalizations, living space and family function in community-dwelling patients with schizophrenia and to provide a theoretical basis for improving family function. Methods: The study included 281 patients with schizophrenia in community-based rehabilitation. A homemade general questionnaire was used to collect information about the number of previous hospitalizations and living space of the participants. A family assessment device was used to evaluate the family function of the patients. Results: The living space of the schizophrenic patients in community rehabilitation was positively related to family function communication (= 0.043) and negatively related to behavior control (=-0.073). Family function was negatively correlated with the number of hospitalizations (=-0.063); however, there were no statistically significant differences in the number of hospitalizations and family function of patients based on different living spaces. Conclusions: The number of previous hospitalizations had a negative impact on family function in patients with schizophrenia in the community. Improvements in living conditions may not have a significant positive effect on family function or the number of hospitalizations. Keywords: community, rehabilitation, schizophrenia, family function.
