<body>
<p>Life expectancy is increasing world-wide, thus age-related diseases are becoming a major health concern. Chronic diseases and related outcomes, such as osteoporosis and associated fractures, diabetes, endocrine, and cardiovascular disease, may seriously impact people&#x00027;s quality of life and their perceived quality of life (Guicciardi, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">2017</xref>; Marchetti et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">2017</xref>; Catalano et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">2020</xref>; Vita et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B40">2020</xref>; Di Bari et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">2021</xref>; Martino et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">2021a</xref>,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">b</xref>,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">c</xref>). This impact may, in turn, lead to psychopathological consequences (Di Giuseppe et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">2020a</xref>; Giusti et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">2021</xref>). Indeed, psychopathological symptoms frequently occur in tandem with chronic medical conditions and can even predict, and impact, mortality independently of a wide range of potential confounders (Kiecolt-Glaser et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">2002</xref>; Lapolla et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">2012</xref>; Kelly et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">2019</xref>).</p>
<p>Moreover, psychological aspects may also drive individual behavior, including adherence to medical advice, deeply conditioning the management of chronic diseases (Marchini et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">2020</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">2021a</xref>,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B26">b</xref>). Anxiety and depression, emotional distress (e.g., alexithymia, abnormal disgust processing), body integrity identity disorders, cognitive deficits, lead to a variety of functional somatic disorders and affect a patient&#x00027;s attitude to treatment, which can impact their perceived quality of life (Vicario, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">2013</xref>; Craparo et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">2016</xref>; Di Giuseppe et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">2019</xref>; Conversano et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">2020</xref>; Martino et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">2020</xref>; Barchetta et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">2021</xref>; Gangemi et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">2021</xref>; La Rosa et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">2021</xref>; Liotta et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">2021</xref>; Vicario et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B37">2021</xref>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.0202">Martino et al.</ext-link>). Therefore, overturning the usual causal direction body-mind, evidence exists regarding the key role of psychopathological factors in the history of chronic illness (Castelnuovo, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">2010</xref>; Castelnuovo et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">2015</xref>; Conversano, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">2019</xref>; Martino et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">2019</xref>; Caputo, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">2020</xref>; Vicario et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B39">2020b</xref>). A strict evaluation of the psychological variables could contribute to a better understanding of the individual condition and possibly predict the risk of the onset of new medical diseases or complications (Salehinejad et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">2020</xref>; Lucifora et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">2021</xref>; Sardella et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">2021</xref>). This could suggest a new direction in psychopathological research and prevention, leading to screening subjects at risk for medical events in order to individualize and improve diagnostic and therapeutic approaches (Vicario and Nitsche, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B38">2013</xref>; Di Giuseppe et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">2020b</xref>,<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">c</xref>).</p>
<p>Following the previous Research Topic on Psychological Factors as Determinants of Medical Conditions (Martino et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">2019</xref>), in this second volume, we aim to update the latest developments including interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary contributions in order to understand the interrelations among psychopathological aspects, somatic symptoms, and medical outcomes.</p>
<p>Our collection includes 17 articles&#x02014;four opinion articles, five review studies, and eight research studies&#x02014;which address several aspects of body-psyche integration from a theoretical, research and intervention perspective. Nine articles focused on clinical samples, with specific regard to developmental psychopathologies (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.572917">Di Giuseppe et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2021.640175">Sorrenti and Filippello</ext-link>), neurological disorders (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.612366">Kelly et al.</ext-link>), learning disabilities (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.611818">Cataudella et al.</ext-link>), personality disorders (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2020.558145">Eikeseth et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2020.602342">Williams et al.</ext-link>), and chronic and medical conditions (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2021.635708">Conversano and Di Giuseppe</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.611558">Guicciardi et al.</ext-link>, <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.02026">Martino et al.</ext-link>). Whereas, eight articles dealt with general populations in order to examine the role of personality characteristics or dispositions (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.01683">Conversano et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.01900">Conversano et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.607783">Merlo et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.552740">Rymarczyk et al.</ext-link>) and some variables connected with emotion processing (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2020.611489">Conversano; Gaggero et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2020.576597">Di Giuseppe et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2020.00870">Di Giuseppe et al.</ext-link>). Overall, this collection contributes to deepening the interrelations between physical and mental health and well-being, highlighting the need to summarize the existing research knowledge (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.611818">Cataudella et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.01683">Conversano et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2020.611489">Gaggero et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.612366">Kelly et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.02026">Martino et al.</ext-link>), provide new empirical evidence (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.01900">Conversano et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2020.576597">Di Giuseppe et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.611558">Guicciardi et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.607783">Merlo et al.</ext-link>, <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2020.602342">Williams et al.</ext-link>), develop and validate measurement tools (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2020.00870">Di Giuseppe et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2020.558145">Eikeseth et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.552740">Rymarczyk et al.</ext-link>), and discuss the advances in clinical treatments and approaches (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2021.670196">Conversano</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2021.635708">Conversano and Di Giuseppe</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.572917">Di Giuseppe et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2021.640175">Sorrenti and Filippello</ext-link>).</p>
<p>We hope that the articles here presented may provide interesting insights and help researchers and practitioners grasping the complexity of human mind and embracing a health promotion perspective, attentive to improving individuals&#x00027; quality of life and adjustment processes at a physical, mental, and social level (Tomai et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">2019</xref>; Vicario et al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B36">2020a</xref>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.01683">Conversano et al.</ext-link>; <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.01900">Conversano et al.</ext-link>).</p>
