However, Many studies have shown that improper restraints can bring many adverse outcomes. Nursing staff are the main practitioner of physical restraint in nursing home and play an important role in the decision-making and management of restraint. In China, there is still a lack of a large-scale survey on the current situation of restraint. This study aimed to identify the situation and the influencing factors of knowledge, attitude and practice of nursing staffs towards physical restraint in elderly care institutions. Methods: This cross-sectional multi-center descriptive study was conducted. 311 staffs in 25 elderly care institutions in Zhejiang Province were recruited using a quota sampling method. A self-made questionnaire which included general information and knowledge, attitude and practice status of physical restraint was applied. Results: The average scoring rate of knowledge and attitude dimension of 311 staffs were 48.7%, 75.6% respectively. The average scoring rate of practice dimension of 140 staffs who have implemented restraint was 80.1%. Educational background and training experience were the influencing factors of restraint knowledge. Training experience and professional title were the influencing factors of restraint attitude. The restraint knowledge, length of service, education background and restraint attitude were the influencing factors of restraint behavior. Conclusions: The knowledge of physical restraint among nursing staff is not promising. Their attitude towards restraint was still improper or irresponsible in some aspects. The practice of restraint is not standard enough. It is necessary to strengthen the restraint training for nursing staff, so as to improve the overall level of restraint knowledge, attitude and behavior of staffs.
