JOURNAL=Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems VOLUME=Volume 7 - 2023 YEAR=2023 URL=https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/sustainable-food-systems/articles/10.3389/fsufs.2023.1091812 DOI=10.3389/fsufs.2023.1091812 ISSN=2571-581X ABSTRACT=Climate change is a global issue that has negatively impacted all sectors, including agriculture. The adverse impacts of climate change on men and women are felt unequally. However, less or no focus has been placed on investigating the factors influencing the choice of adoption strategies among men and women farmers in cowpeas and beans value chains. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the perception of male and female smallholder farmers towards climate change and establish the determinants of farmers’ choice of climate change adaptation strategies. Proportionate random sampling was used to select 154 farmers from Ejura-Sekyedumase and Atebubu-Amantin municipalities. Data was gathered using a semi-structured questionnaire and analysed using STATA 14 software. Descriptive statistics and multivariate probit models were then used to analyse the data. Descriptive results indicated that male farmers had a higher level of awareness of climate change than female farmers. However, changing farming practices as an adaptation measure was not common among all the farmers. The multivariate probit results indicated that farmers’ choice of adaptation strategy was influenced by inequalities expressed by gender, age, household size, land ownership, and access to agricultural training. We recommend that government and private sector partners design gender-sensitive extension services to close the gender gap in the adoption of climate change adaptation strategies. Also, farmers should not only be involved in climate change adaptation planning but also be trained in various climate change adaptation strategies.
