About this Research Topic
The consumption of fossil fuels is seemingly unavoidable for the foreseeable future, and so CO2 mitigation has become more and more important in combatting climate change. Over the past decades, CO2 capture, storage, and utilization (CCSU) has been proposed and since recognized as an essential player in carbon reduction. According to the International Energy Agency, the “no more than 2 °C” target is practically unachievable without CCSU. At present, most CCSU researchers are focusing on CO2 sources related to power generation, while CCSU linked to other non-power sectors has not been well addressed.
The importance of CCSU to the decarbonization of non-power industries is equivalent to its importance in the power sector. The reasons for this are threefold:
1) CO2 Emissions from non-power industries, such as steel, cement, and coal chemistry, amounts to a significant share of total emissions (22.2% from industries vs 27.5% from power plants according to US EPA).
2) While renewables provide promising alternative options for power generation, strategies for carbon reduction from non-power industries are still very limited.
3) CO2 from certain industrial emission sources can be captured with lower costs due to high CO2 partial pressure and concentrations, which may translate to early opportunities for large-scale demonstration and deployment of CCSU technologies.
