About this Research Topic
Forensic analytical chemistry aims to apply in field or inside the laboratory newly developed methods, in order to resolve complex criminal cases. Object of the analysis is the crime evidence, which in turn can be a biological sample or a seized material. Quite often, only small quantities of sample are available, in which the analyte is present at trace level. In this scenario, a continuous expansion of the forensic chemistry is highly needed, not only in terms of more sophisticated analytical methods, but also in terms of advancement of multivariate statistical and chemometric tools. Only a proper combination of analysis and processing of results can, indeed, assist the interpretation of the findings and support the crime solving in real situations.
We will describe the analytical progress, especially in terms of sensitivity, which is constantly seeked by several research groups. Furthermore, we will investigate the applications in field of new analytical techniques, with a special attention to mass spectrometry. Finally, we will explore the importance of developing sophisticated chemometric tools, which can prove highly effective and provide targeted information for the crime solving.
