About this Research Topic
Advanced nanomaterials have been extensively used in oil/gas industry to enhance oil/gas recovery. Such advanced nanomaterials can either be synthesized with sophisticated procedures, e.g. special nano-silica, nano-cellulose or nano-graphite, or obtained by simple purification using gases such as N2 or CO2. It is noted that these materials are generally selected based on their high efficiency in enhancing oil/gas recovery. Extensive studies were conducted to evaluate the efficiency of these nanomaterials in recovering oil/gas. Recently, unconventional oil/gas have been playing an increasingly important role in energy supply. Unconventional reservoirs generally possess unique characteristics, such as extremely low permeability and heterogeneity, which makes it quite difficult to recover oil/gas from these reservoirs. This raises the importance of leveraging more advanced nanomaterials (such as nanoparticles) to recover oil/gas from unconventional reservoirs. Therefore, more sophisticated process should be proposed to synthesize such nanomaterials or novel chemical agents should be introduced.
Recently, new nanomaterials have been proposed for the recovery of oil/gas. However, basic understanding of the recovery mechanisms and synthetic methods of these nanomaterials is often limited. There is still a need to study the mechanisms and synthetic methods which could increase efficiency in recovering oil/gas from reservoirs.
This Research Topic aims at collecting Original Research Articles or Reviews on the development and application of advanced nanomaterials in oilfield chemistry. The Research Topic welcomes the following types of studies:
• Synthesis and design of new nanomaterials with future applications in oil/gas industry
• Enhance unconventional or conventional oil/gas recovery with the assistance of nanomaterials: experimental approaches or numerical simulations
• Investigation of the basic mechanisms of nanomaterials in enhancing oil/gas recovery
• Applications of nanomaterials in oilfields
• Challenges of advanced nanomaterials in oilfield chemistry
