Biopolymers in Drug Delivery Applications

Biopolymers are naturally occurring materials during the life cycle of plants, animals, bacteria, and fungi. A plethora of biopolymers (polysaccharide/ protein-based) has been investigated for delivery applications due to their biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxic nature, and low cost. Biopolymers are used to design a range of carrier systems appropriate for delivery of various biological /chemical compounds and even serve as drug-release modifiers, binders, etc. overcoming limitations of synthetic polymers. Biopolymers are pivotal in modifying drugs having unfavorable pharmacokinetics, poor solubility, instability, high toxicity, drug resistance, and low cellular uptake. With the advancement in nanotechnology, researchers are interrelating with biopolymers for the fabrication of delivery systems for drugs, genes, and proteins.

With every passing day, researchers are publishing their findings on biopolymers which are fabricated via various conventional and nano techniques for varied delivery applications. However, in their findings, very little knowledge is included regarding the mechanism and the factors affecting the fabrication of biopolymers via these techniques. Therefore, we attempt to divert possible modifications, mechanisms, and applications of biopolymers intended for catering bioactive molecules. This Research Topic intends to cover research of recent advances in biopolymers including outlook, challenges, and limitations for use. With collective articles, it can form a strong basis to mitigate the on-going, as well as future, biopolymer prospects in drug delivery applications for wide stakeholders like students, researchers, industrialists. This special issue can be a significant addition to the literature in the area of biopolymers and their use in drug delivery and is expected to remain a milestone, creating a foundation until marketed products begin outranging from biopolymers.

We invite researchers to submit Original Research, Reviews, and mini-reviews intended to summarize the different biopolymer applications to cater to wide therapeutics using various techniques and the factors affecting the successful fabrication of biopolymer-based deliverables. We invite research exploring, but not limited to, the following research areas:

• Growing demands for the biopolymer-based delivery systems
• Fabrication of Biopolymer based drug delivery vehicles
• Coupling of nano techniques with renewable polymers
• Application of the renewable polymers various drug, gene, protein delivery
• Mechanistic approaches and modification of chemical properties of biopolymers for the intended use
