About this Research Topic
COVID-19 is an emerging, rapidly evolving public health crisis. In response to the pandemic, it has not only been necessary to establish a collaborative framework to prioritize therapeutic and vaccine candidates but there is also an increased need for innovative digital health technologies to realize an effective and safe public health response.
This Research Topic focuses on new digital health technologies to manage the ongoing coronavirus pandemic as well as predict and prevent future public health crises. The following themes are of particular interest:
1) Internet of Health Things (IoHT) enabling technologies and systems with various application scenarios to manage the public health response to the COVID-19 or future crises. This includes medical devices, wearable devices, as well as unobtrusive and opportunistic sensors, forming the foundation for the digital transformation of healthcare.
2) Unobtrusive sensing systems for detecting disease and for monitoring patients with relatively mild symptoms whose clinical situation could suddenly worsen in improvised hospitals.
3) Telehealth technologies for the remote monitoring and diagnosis of diseases, to minimize high-risk contacts and reduce demand on health care facilities.
4) The efficacy and reliability of established connected healthcare.
5) Wearable devices suitable for monitoring the populations at risk and those in quarantine, both for evaluating the health status of caregivers and management personnel, as well as for facilitating a triage process for admission to hospitals.
6) Future direction, challenges and opportunities in the development of sensor systems for data analysis and AI, allowing new business models to emerge and enable change in work processes, productivity improvements, cost containment, and enhanced customer experience.
