Pulp Revitalization/Revascularization: Underlying Mechanisms and Harnessing of Dental Stem Cells

Pulpal revitalization/revascularization has emerged as a new treatment option for pulpal necrosis in younger patients. In the literature, there are many successful case reports employing pulp revitalization/revascularization procedures that have demonstrated the potential of stem cells from the apical papilla (SCAP), dental follicle stem cells (DFSCs), periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) and dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) in the regenerative process and wound healing. Clinical methods and procedures for revitalization have been widely introduced. However, the precise mechanisms underlying this regenerative process remains unclear.

Until now, dentists have only been able to save necrotic teeth with incomplete root formation through apexification. This procedure induces the closure of the apical foramen without increasing the thickness of the root. Pulp revitalization/revascularization using dental stem cells offers the potential to solve this problem and also revitalize the pulp tissue. However, revitalization is a complicated process, largely due to the close association of the vasculature and innervation of dental pulp. If we can elucidate the mechanisms underlying this clinical procedure, this could broaden treatment options available for pulpal necrosis and similar pathologies.

This Research Topic aims to explore the detailed mechanisms underlying the revitalization/revascularization process of pulp tissue through basic, translational or clinical research, including indicative case reports. Topics of interest also include the isolation and characteristics of various types of dental stem cells for the partial and complete regeneration of pulp. This Research Topic also encompasses research into enhanced clinical procedures and materials which facilitate the regenerative process, e.g. improved irrigation methodologies and next generation dental materials.
