Development of future nuclear power technology demands further advancement in economic competitiveness, the robustness of safety feature, as well as advantages in sustainability. As nuclear fuel technology is the cornerstone of nuclear power technology, a recent innovation in nuclear reactor technology is leading research and development of innovative nuclear fuel, for example, the accident tolerant fuel. R&D activities for advanced nuclear fuel technology proceed in several aspects, including innovative fuel and cladding materials, innovative spacer grid design, neutronics and thermal-hydraulics analysis. Such R&D activities are significantly benefitted from the advanced simulation approaches, such as subchannel analysis, computational fluid dynamics and multi-physics, and multi-scale coupling from the advanced experimental technology.

This Research Topic is organized to report on the recent progress in the R&D of advanced nuclear fuel technology. The submission on the latest development and testing of innovative fuel and cladding materials, innovative design and testing of spacer grid, high-fidelity subchannel analysis, development of multi-physics, multi-scale coupling simulation approach for fuel behavior, high-resolution flow and heat transfer experiments in the advanced fuel assembly are welcomed.
