Anti-doping Interventions in Adolescents

Doping to improve performance in sport is an increasing problem in high performance sport, but is not limited to sport played for leisure or at school. School sports participation is an intense environment for the adolescent athlete, placing high demands for performance in order to get drafted into professional sports. Hence, due to the ever increasing pressure on adolescent athletes to perform and the increased competitiveness of sports, many athletes are adding pharmacological agents such as performance enhancing substances (PES) and supplements to their training and nutritional eating plans to achieve increased performance levels. Doping is regarded as a form of cheating where athletes use substances that are on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited list. To help curb this increase in doping, anti-doping interventions and related activities are part of the solution.

Over the years, anti-doping activities in sport have shifted from secondary prevention (intervening after athletes have used) to educational strategies focused on primary prevention through promoting abstinence. Despite the increasing efforts to promote education on anti-doping, there is limited empirical evidence guiding educational anti-doping initiatives.

The main goal of this Research Topic is to gather research in the field of doping in sport, particularly anti-doping intervention in adolescents. Interventions are not limited to educational methodologies. Innovative anti-doping intervention designs for adolescents
