Mesenchymal Stromal- and Stem Cell-Based Applications in Livestock Species

Although the main targets for mesenchymal stromal stem cell (MSC)-based applications in veterinary medicine have been equine and small animals, recently the study of MSC has expanded to livestock species including bovine, ovine and porcine. In these species, MSCs have been successfully harvested from a wide range of tissues including umbilical cord blood, Wharton´s jelly, amniotic fluid, bone marrow adipose and fetal liver. The study of MSC in livestock species has focused on the development of potential biotechnological applications, but also on its use as a model for the study of human pathologies. As an example, bovine MSCs derived from amniotic fluid and adipose tissue have been used for cloning, and they have been tested in many studies due their therapeutic capacity to repair or regenerate organs. Moreover, the characterization of ovine, caprine and porcine MSCs have been used for the study of osteoarticular, cardiovascular and neurological diseases that affect humans.

The aim of this Research Topic will be to evaluate recent research on the study of MSCs from livestock species considering topics from the description of basic biology to the development of biotechnological applications including animal models for human diseases. We welcome papers on, but not limited to, the following themes:
• New tissue sources of MSCs in livestock species.
• Plasticity and differentiation potentials of MSCs.
• Therapeutic applications of MSCs in livestock diseases.
• Development of reproductive and biotechnological applications of MSCs in livestock.
• Livestock species as models for human pathologies.
• Regenerative applications in bovine, porcine, ovine and caprine species.
