Managing the Individual: Variation Among and Opportunities for Managing Livestock Individually

About this Research Topic

Precision technologies for animal agriculture open the door to move from management of large groups of animals toward individual animal management without requiring dramatic restructuring of infrastructure, farming practices, and profit models. As such individual animal monitoring holds promise to revolutionize animal agriculture through improved capacity to understand, monitor, and manage animal health and wellbeing, productivity, and sustainability of livestock operations. Commercial technologies for precision animal management include, among others: wearable sensors, “smart” infrastructure, acoustic monitoring, and visual sensing tools. Next-generation technologies currently in development include expansions of these current technologies, as well as departure into cutting-edge areas such as implantable sensors, smart robotics, and automated management. Despite the opportunity presented by this blossoming industry expansion, commercial uptake of precision technologies has been fairly limited across the livestock management sectors. The goal of this Research Topic is to provide a summary of the challenges and opportunities to use current and next-generation technologies and analytics to improve health, wellbeing, productivity, and sustainability of livestock production.

The scope of papers in this Research Topic spans across species and production platforms to review the currently available technologies, the opportunities for next-generation technologies, the barriers to technology adoption, and the variation among individual animals that can be capitalized upon by such technologies for the advancement of animal health, wellbeing, productivity, and sustainability. A list of proposed topics is as follows:

Section 1: Opportunity in Uncertainty:
• Individual variation of health, wellbeing, and productivity of meat producing animals
• Individual variation of health, wellbeing, and productivity of dairy producing animals
• Individual variation of health, wellbeing, and productivity of poultry

Section 2: Technologies and Analytics Opportunities
• Technologies currently available on farm, their strengths and limitations
• Next-generation technologies for advancing health, wellbeing, and productivity of livestock
• Analytics needs for advancing health, wellbeing, and productivity of livestock

Section 3: Sustainable Precision Animal Agriculture
• Environmental impacts of precision technology adoption
• Economic challenges and opportunities for precision technology use on farm
• Social acceptability of precision animal agriculture
