Due to the demographic change, the number of aged and multimorbid patients requiring liver surgery for malignant disease is increasing. Despite substantial improvements in surgical technique and perioperative care, this group of patients still faces a substantial risk of peri-operative morbidity and mortality, when subjected to extended liver resection. Currently, novel strategies are emerging to also give these patients at risk access to the needed the life-saving resection procedure. This includes improvement of pre-operative assessment to better estimate the individual risk of the patient, improvement in imaging and virtual planning to more precisely resect the lesion without compromising the future remnant liver (FLR), alternative surgical strategies using 2 stage hepatectomy to increase the volume of the FLR.

With this research topic we aim for presenting cutting edge research data from clinical and experimental studies dedicated to improve the outcome of extended liver resection, especially for patients at risk. We want to invite authors to share their considerations, experience and results regarding patient selection, novel peri-operative measures including pre-operative conditioning and postoperative rehabilitation, surgical strategies and techniques, and the required institutional set-up.

The scope of this specific collection includes clinical trials, narrative reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, as well as experimental animal research. Authors are also welcome to upload interesting research videos.
