Social media has greatly influenced many aspects of our society, in particular, healthcare. Social media is one of the most popular channels used by patients to access health-related information, share their medical stories and experiences with other patients, and communicate with healthcare providers for seeking healthcare supports. It opens a great opportunity for the development and application of artificial intelligence techniques and data mining approaches to study social media data for health-related issues and promoting healthcare.

This Research Topic intends to cover all the aspects of social media analytics and mining for healthcare: extraction, collection, integration, representation, analysis, visualization, and validation of social media data in healthcare.

We invite submissions of papers for studying social media in healthcare including both method development and healthcare applications. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

• Collection and integration of health-related social media data including Facebook, Twitters, and Reddit
• Health Information extraction from social media, for example, detection and extraction of health-related terms and concepts in social media
• Processing and standardization of health data in social media such as mapping of health-relevant mentions in social media to standardized forms
• Data representation (e.g., word embedding and graph embedding) of social media in healthcare
• Health knowledge discovery from social media such as knowledge graph construction
• Visualization and interpretation of social media data in healthcare
• Data-driven healthcare applications with social media, for instance, disease surveillance and substance abuse monitoring

Keywords: social media data, healthcare, Health Information extraction, health data detection, health relevant mentions, health knowledge discovery, disease surveillance

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
