Usefulness of Plasma Non-Cholesterol Sterols as Markers of Cholesterol Metabolism

In the past decades, several techniques have been used to improve our understanding of cholesterol metabolism and its role in atherosclerosis and dyslipidemias. These factor include the comprehension of the disease under the influence of environmental factors such as different foods and drugs like cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) inhibitors that increases HDL-C concentration.

Amongst these techniques, we highlight the plasma lipoprotein kinetics and fecal balance using isotope-labeled sterols and the measurement in plasma phytosterols and of non-cholesterol sterol precursors of cholesterol synthesis. These methods are utilized into order to replace costly procedures. However, results obtained have been contradictory in patients and in experimental animal models.

The aim of this Research Topic is to evaluate the usefulness of plasma dietary phytosterols and of cholestanol, a metabolite of cholesterol, as methods of measurement of intestinal cholesterol absorption, and of plasma non-cholesterol sterols precursors of cholesterol synthesis, like desmosterol, squalene and lathosterol, as procedures to measure cholesterol synthesis in several pathologies such as obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia of genetic origin, alcohol and drugs.

With this Research Topic, we aim to answer the following questions and receive papers on the following sub-themes:
1. Plasma cholesterol kinetics;
2. Cholesterol synthesis;
3. Cholesterol absorption;
4. Validation in methods of measurement of cholesterol metabolism;
5. Are dietary phytosterols anti-atherogenic?
6. How useful are plasma non-cholesterol sterols as methods of measurement of cholesterol metabolism in humans?
7. Does serum cholestenol measure intestinal cholesterol absorption?
