About this Research Topic
Can sport, tourism, leisure and events (SLTE) be powers for good? What can they do in a profoundly changing world and what do profound changes in the world mean for SLTE? These questions arise as the social, cultural and economic world seeks to restructure in the wake of the deadly disease Coronavirus (COVID-19). In this state of unrest, our sensitivities to other extant global turbulence are piqued.
Exasperated by the global climate emergency, there is profound concern about changes to the natural environment. Apprehension is felt about socio-economic disorder: an awareness of extreme movements of political popularism; frustrations at the growth in wealth polarization, and an increased rage at the inequalities still being suffered because of gender, sex and race. Concomitantly technological change is beyond the tipping point, possibly revolutionizing our work and play forever. So, are current norms of society and prevailing modes of thought and action enough?
The overall purpose of this research theme is to advance current conceptions of - and critical reflection upon - the role, purpose and potential of sport, leisure, tourism and events (SLTE) in and for human society. The call is multi-disciplinary in nature but does requires focus on one or more of the four elements in the proposed title, i.e. sport, leisure, tourism, and events.
The theme allows contribution to the question of sustainability. Sustainability has been defined as a transcendent societal mega-mega trend. As such, it is a trend that lasts a long time and is likely to have strong resonance in social, economic, political, technological terms. Yet the world has changed far more quickly than we or the reasoned power of UN members, acting governments and agents have anticipated. Accordingly, a goal of this research theme could also be consideration and challenge of accepted paths of adaption and resilience, i.e. beyond sustaining society. It may be an enquiry of the transformative capacity of SLTE. The call gives researchers and practitioners the opportunity to discuss, evaluate and/or critique the opportunities and limitations of SLTE as powerful regulators or dynamic change agent(s) in the world. This could relate to people, or to place, or to organisations, or to theory or to education.
We welcome papers that consider the power of one or more of the SLTEs, with (but not limited to) consideration of social change, turbulence and critical knowledge. Possible topics area could include:
• Case studies, scoping or scenarios of SLTE in a turbulent world
• Dynamics of sports and festivals in anti-city futures
• Resetting SLTE education in a post covid-19 world
• SLTE design in collaborative and inclusive leisure
• SLTE and cultural identities in times of change
• Architecture of SLTE in 2030 and beyond
• Global emergency and virtual SLTEs
• Pandemics and new SLTE experience norms
• Women, professional sport and social change
• Transforming environments and the effect on SLTE
• SLTE business ventures for access and empowerment
• Mega-events in times of changing socio-economic norms
