Infectious diseases are transmissible diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi, which confer to morbidities and mortalities in humans all over the world. Early recognition of the presence of causative microorganism is the key factor to implement an optimal treatment of the infectious diseases. The application of bioengineering and biotechnology makes the rapid and precise detection of infectious agents possible. During the pandemic, such as COVID-19 infections, these tools will be necessary for telemedicine. In addition, a more rapid diagnosis for drug-resistant pathogens can help optimal therapy for these infectious diseases. These will further improve the clinical treatment and patient outcomes.

The conventional methods for the identification of microorganisms are time-consuming or expensive. Although some detection devices can deliver more precise or rapid diagnosis, the need of well-trained technicians or expensive equipment has compromised their usage. In the contrary, several rapid diagnostics can provide the results more rapidly, and their sensitivity and specificity are much lower than the others. The combination of bioengineering and biotechnology in the detection of microorganisms can diagnose the infectious diseases in a timely and accurate manner. The goal of this research topic is to introduce novel detection devices for the improvement of current diagnosis. The enhancement of the detection limitations can further improve the clinical outcomes.

The aim of the current research topic is to cover promising, recent, and novel research trends in the detection devices for infectious diseases field. This research topic welcomes submissions of manuscripts in all acceptable formats, including original research articles, method articles, and reviews that address detection devices for infectious diseases. Areas to be covered in this research topic may include, but are not limited to:

- Novel development of detection methods for infectious diseases
- Application of bioengineering and biotechnology for detection of infectious agents
- Improvement of current detection devices for pathogenic microorganisms
- Point-of-care diagnostic testing for infectious diseases.

Keywords: infectious disease diagnosis, COVID-19, drug-resistant pathogen, point-of-care, biotechnology
