About this Research Topic
In recent years advanced computer techniques have gained importance in many areas of dentistry to improve diagnoses and treatment procedures. Emerging digitalization in dentistry leads to generate big data from patients. Processing this large amount of data needs fast and efficient computer algorithms. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has a great potential to use this big data to enhance the quality of dental care by providing efficient solutions for research, education, and clinical practices.
In this Research Topic we plan to investigate innovative AI-based technologies to proceed the state-of-the-art of dentistry in research, education, and clinical practices. Dentists, engineering and scientists in the field of artificial intelligence, computer vision and medical imaging, robotics and sensor augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are welcome to propose their solutions for various applications in dentistry and oral health, such as deep-learning for early detection of caries, periodontal diseases and oral cancers, AI technologies for orthodontic or prosthodontic treatment planning, and robotics for oral surgery.
We will consider the research works with AI in dentistry and oral health. Listed below are the research topics:

Falk Schwendicke is a founder of dentalXrai, a startup on AI applications in dentistry.
Joachim Krois is co-founder of a Charité startup focusing on dental image analysis using artificial intelligence.
