Medical Devices for the Diagnosis and Monitoring of Motor Disorders

Neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease are often multi-symptom diseases, and many of these do not have suitable blood tests nor can be diagnosed readily using medical imaging modalities. The current method for assessment of these diseases requires clinical observations and patient described symptoms, which can be inaccurate and biased. This results in missing some of the early symptoms and increases the difficultly of designing protocols for assessing the effect of medication and therapy treatment.

To overcome this, technologies are being developed and tested that can provide objective measurement of symptoms. These include software-based devices, wearable sensors devices, and tissue testing devices.

This Research Topic will aim to highlight the design or testing of medical devices that can be used for the diagnosis or monitoring of neurodegenerative diseases. The overall goal of the article collection is to feature research that will make a social impact and improve the lives of many people.

We are seeking papers that describe new technology and devices, and also the test results of existing devices for this application.

We do understand that some of you may have concerns about the intellectual property, and we would invite your paper that describes the outcomes of the tests you may have performed, subject to sufficient information being provided that ensures the reproducibility of the work.

We are hopeful to publish a combination of engineering and clinical papers. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to :

• Wearable devices to measure motor impairment such as Rigidity, Tremor, and Bradykinesia.

• Clinician support devices for diagnosis and monitoring of neurodegenerative disease

• Clinical evidence of the devices to measure the effect of medication and treatment

• Devices for computerized diagnosis and assessment of neurodegenerative disease

• Devices and methods for measuring cognitive impairment in neurodegenerative disease patients.

• Artificial intelligence-based devices for recognizing neurodegenerative disease symptoms.

• Smartphone-based devices for diagnosis and monitoring of neurodegenerative disease patients.
