About this Research Topic
Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment of obesity to obtain long-term weight loss and is associated with several beneficial health effects such as remission and prevention of diabetes, prevention of cardiovascular disease, and premature death. However, there are also several reports on side effects such as malnutrition and muscle mass loss and some bariatric surgery procedures are associated with an increased risk of alcohol problems. Thus, nutritional strategies and guidelines after bariatric surgery can be of great impact for preventing several of these conditions. Furthermore, nutritional education and preparation of the patient for the bariatric procedure can have a major impact on both short and long-term outcomes.
This Research Topic will focus on the pre- and post-operative nutrition in bariatric surgery to gain an understanding of the health effects and mechanisms of different nutritional strategies. Knowledge in clinical nutrition is of paramount importance in the complex clinical management of bariatric surgery patients - thus article contributions from clinical nutritionists are of particular interest to this issue. Furthermore, we welcome submissions of Original Research, Review and Mini-Review articles focused on the following topics:
- role of clinical nutrition in the management of patients undergoing and undergone bariatric surgery
- nutrition advice/monitoring for prospective bariatric surgery patients,
- changes in food preferences after bariatric surgery,
- supplementation regimen to prevent nutrient deficiencies after bariatric surgery,
- nutritional strategies to prevent muscle loss after different types of bariatric surgery,
- nutritional strategies to prevent hypoglycemia and optimize diabetes status after bariatric surgery,
- longterm follow-up and pharmacological treatments after bariatric surgery failure,
- we also welcome submissions related to the psychological aspects related to dietary habits changes before and after bariatric surgery.
