Cardiothoracic diseases are pivotal causes of death in companion animals which share various common pathogenesis, pathways, diagnosis principles and treatment to human diseases. Dogs and cats provide social support to their owners to reduce risk of disease. The early prediction and effective treatment of cardiothoracic diseases have become a major objective to reduce the epidemic expansion. Echocardiography and biomarkers are methods to diagnose cardiac diseases when cardiac dysfunction is prominent; nevertheless, they still cannot predict or early diagnose heart failure before overt clinical symptoms. Currently, there are different research trials to find out new diagnosis indices and biomarkers.

The aim of this special issue is to provide the recent trends in diagnosis and treatment of cardiothoracic diseases in dogs and cats to improve the disease outcome. This Research Topic endeavors to validate non-invasive tools in cardiovascular examination for clinical setting.

More specifically, we welcome studies looking at:
- The recent echocardiographic technology including speckle-tracking echocardiography
- Color M-mode echocardiography (CMME) for the measurement of intra-ventricular pressure gradients (IVPG)
- Vector flow mapping (VFM) to measure the vorticity
These methods are non-invasive and could achieve early diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases (CVD).

Further studies that will also be encourages include:
- The association between cardiovascular events and changes in bio-fluid to improve biomarkers in CVD diagnosis
This includes:
- Micronutrients,
- Cardioprotective therapy,
- Metalloid, microbiota, proteomic, and metabolomic research

Keywords: Echocardiography, Biomarker, Proteome, Intervention radiology, cardiac catheter
