Advances in Lightweight Cement-Based Materials and Concrete Composites

About this Research Topic

As technology continues to advance, lightweight cement-concrete composites can be produced to achieve adequate strength for different applications and benefits in construction materials. Lightweight cement composites and concrete materials have been widely used in construction and its benefit include reduction in dead loads; savings in transporting, handling, and installation costs for precast units on site; and improved earthquake resistance, with excellent acoustic and thermal properties performance.

Lightweight cement composites and concrete can be produced by introducing different methods such as (i) aluminum powder or foaming agents, (ii) lightweight aggregate and (iii) pervious concrete. All these further development methods such as utilization of cement composites containing special aggregate inclusions or waste materials and the formulation of ultra-lightweight foamed concrete (ULFC).

In comparing to novel aspects of conventional concrete materials. The scope of this Research Topic covers a wide range of lightweight cement composite materials such as fibre-reinforced lightweight concrete (FRLWC), floatable lightweight cement composites (FLCC), ultra-lightweight cement composites (ULCC), and textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) as an innovative composite material.

This Research Topic aims to cover original or review articles exploring the innovation in
lightweight cement composites and concrete materials. We welcome both original research and review articles.

Potential themes of interests include, but not limited to the following:

(1) Acoustic properties of lightweight concrete
(2) Artificial lightweight aggregate
(3) Design of lightweight composite concrete
(4) Ferrocement lightweight floating concrete
(5) Fire resistance lightweight concrete
(6) Mechanical and durability properties of lightweight concrete
(7) Microstructures of lightweight concrete
(8) Structural performance of lightweight concrete
(9) Recycled materials for lightweight concrete

Keywords: Lightweight concrete, Fibre-reinforced concrete, Cement composite, Waste materials, Environmentally friendly
