Recent advances in precision medicine and single cell technologies to understand disease heterogeneity require sophisticated model platforms that can be utilized to gain better insight into disease pathogenesis. With the advent of several different platforms, such as gene editing in cells and animals, as well as 3D models in combination with tissue engineering, we have just scratched the surface of the platforms available to make personalized medicine a reality.

Technological developments require advances in model systems that can recapitulate human diseases. The goal of this Research Topic is to gain insight into various platforms available to study human diseases across different organs. These platforms, when utilized with new era technologies such as sequencing, and multi-omics approaches can help propel drug development and new therapies that can be personalized for better patient care.

The aim of the current Research Topic is to cover promising, recent, and novel research platforms for disease modeling. Areas to be covered in this Research Topic may include, but are not limited to:

• iPSC-based disease modeling
• Organoid models for disease modeling and drug development
• Advances in animal models for understanding diseases
• Gene editing techniques to develop in vitro disease models
• Microfluidic Chip devices for in vitro disease model development
• Multi-omics approaches for disease monitoring

Keywords: Precision Medicine, Model Platforms, Pathogenesis, Technology, iPSC, Organoids, Animal Models, Gene Editing Techniques, Microfluidic Chip, Multi-omics
