In decades, biomaterial research has received great attention. Holding the potential to advance the current diagnostic and therapeutic systems, biomaterials represent a flourishing area of research in Asia. With the strong support of various funds from the government, more and more Asian scientists have been spearheading great efforts in this interdisciplinary field, making contributions to developing advanced biomaterials. Nowadays, biomaterials are promising for controlled delivery of therapeutic agents, diagnostic systems with innovative contrast and sensing agents, tissue engineering and regenerative technology, and so forth. We are optimistic that the increasing biomaterial innovations worked by Asian scientists will significantly contribute to next-generation precision medicine and further clinical translation.

The Research Topic aims to collect and disseminate state-of-the-art advances in biomaterials science and engineering research within Asia to the global audience. It generally includes the applications of emerging biomaterials as drug delivery vectors, diagnostic agents, tissue engineering scaffolds, and implantable medical devices, providing diagnostic or therapeutic modalities for clinical practice. We hope this Research Topic will promote biomaterial development with the evolutionary concepts and ideas from Asian laboratories.

This Research Topic focuses on recent advancements from the biomaterial community in Asia. Original Research Articles, Reviews, and Mini-Reviews are welcome. The following topics can be included:
• Innovative biomaterials with elaborate synthesis, processing, and characterization for practical applications
• Advanced bioresponsive biomaterials
• Biomaterials as sensitive detectors or contrast agents for disease diagnostics
• Smart biomaterials for efficient delivery of therapeutic agents, such as small-molecule drugs, genes, and proteins
• Medical biomaterials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine
• Intelligent biomaterials for implantable devices
• Reliability and model validation for clinical translations

Keywords: Biomaterials, drug delivery, tissue engineering, bioengineering, biotechnology

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
