Marine/freshwater biological resources are of great economic, social and ecological value. Aquatic ecosystems, mainly formed by aquatic biological resources, play an important role in maintaining material circulation, energy flow, and environmental purification. Efficient, safe, sustainable utilization and high-value development of marine/freshwater biological resources, thereby promoting grain security, food security, and environmental security, has been a long term research focus. It is one of the most practical and innovative fields in global scientific and technological innovation and an effective way to solve the major problems restricting human resources shortage.

The exploitation and high-value utilization of marine/freshwater resources is a promising industry with great development potential. However, there are also some bottlenecks restricting its development; the major theoretical system of high-value utilization is not perfect, lack of original innovation and breakthroughs, key equipment technical support capacity is weak, the industrial development system and mechanism needs innovation, and so on. With the help of modern biotechnologies, the development of bio-based chemical resources, microbial resources, biological gene resources, and the acquisition of food, medicine, functional products, biomass energy and other high-value products are important directions and breakthroughs for the development and high-value utilization of marine/freshwater biological resources. High value-added products from microalgae coupled with wastewater treatment are also hot research topics.

Topics of interest for this Special Issue include but are not limited to: High value-added products from microalgae coupled with wastewater treatment; Resource distribution and utilization potential of economic marine/freshwater organisms; Discovery and cultivation of new marine/freshwater energy plant varieties with high yield and high quality; Key technologies for the development and utilization of marine/freshwater microbial resources; Comprehensive utilization strategies and patterns of marine/freshwater biological resources; Principle and method of high-value utilization technology of low-value waste; Directional preparation of functional active substances; Nutritional evaluation, physicochemical characteristics and targeting effect of active substances; Structure-activity relationship and synergistic mechanism of active components; Modification technology of bioactive substances; Modification technology of biological functional materials; Harmless production technology of high value products. Original research papers, reviews, short communications, perspectives, and comments are all welcomed.

Keywords: marine, freshwater, microalgae, biological resources, exploration
