This Research Topic in the Specialty Section of Frontiers Behavioral and Psychiatric Genetics is focused on novel and innovative approaches to genetic risk factors for psychiatric, neurologic and neurodegenerative disorders. Recent findings have demonstrated that rare genomic variants in addition to common variants might contribute to disease susceptibility. These findings have led to a shift in paradigm and the generation of new hypotheses for disease mechanisms in common complex disorders. Rapid innovative developments in genomic technologies, including but not limited to next-generation sequencing methods, which generate vast amounts of new data daily have revolutionized the research field. Pathway based investigations create new hypotheses of disease mechanisms and therapeutic approaches. Researchers across diverse fields of expertise profit from each other and collaborate to maximize the yield of the investigations and to move the understanding of disease patho-mechanisms forward. However, the interpretation of the findings and the translation into clinical applications is still a matter of intense debate.

This Research Topic will accommodate contributions from a wide range of perspectives covering novel approaches to the phenotype and the heterogeneity of the disorders, as well as diverse methodological and statistical approaches to disease association with common and rare genomic variants, including case studies, family-based, population based and epidemiologic studies. Relevant animal models and in vitro studies are welcomed as well. Contributions from all related and relevant areas of research are encouraged, including theories, opinion, methods, areas of impact and historical perspectives. This first-tier electronic journal will provide a unique setting for the synthesis and integration of ideas and findings that elucidate the nature of genetic contributions to neuro-psychiatric disease. It will summarize increase in our understanding of disease mechanisms and the identification of new therapeutic targets that might pave the way to individualized prevention, treatment and personalized medicine.

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
