Glycolipid metabolic disorder is important in the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus have higher risks of heart damage, peripheral vascular diseases, microvascular diseases (including diabetic retinopathy, neuropathy, nephropathy, etc.). Many trials have confirmed that glycolipid metabolic disorder is associated with vascular injury, and cardiovascular diseases have been identified as a big threat to patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Over the past years, the importance of glycolipid metabolic disorder in maintaining the cardiovascular system and microvascular system healthy has begun to be clarified. However, specific mechanisms of glycolipid metabolism disorder on vascular injury remained unclear. There are also many unknowns in the molecular links between glycogen and lipid metabolism. Moreover, novel therapeutic targets and novel therapies remain to be explored and investigated.

This Research Topic aims at exploring the molecular mechanism of glycolipid metabolism disorder and its cardiovascular and microvascular consequences. We would also like to bring together novel therapeutic targets and treatment methods for glycolipid metabolism disorder and its vascular comorbidities. We welcome submissions of Original Research and Review articles with a focus on the following aspects.
• Molecular mechanisms of the development of glycolipid metabolic disorder
• Mechanisms of glycolipid metabolic disorder in diabetes-related macrovascular and microvascular diseases.
• Novel therapeutic targets and treatment methods on diabetes-related cardiovascular and microvascular diseases targeting glycolipid metabolism

Keywords: Glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, cardiovascular system, microvascular system

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
