Energy systems across the world are undergoing a paradigm shift toward clean and sustainable energy sources. This shift involves technical and organizational level changes along with technological upgrades in various sectors such as energy generation, transmission, and distribution. Consequently, there arise huge engineering challenges to create a sustainable energy system considering social, economic, and environmental factors. The conventional modelling, optimization, and control techniques have limitations in solving the planning and operation problems of energy systems. Hence, Artificial Intelligence (AI), big data, and machine learning enabled techniques are becoming popular in solving the planning and operation of energy systems. This Research Topic will focus on AI-based techniques for energy system planning and operation.

Modern energy systems are becoming complex due to involvement of renewable energy sources, storage, and electric vehicles. The goal of this collection is to cover the recent advances in energy system planning and operation. This special issue will specifically focus on the applications of AI for planning and operation of energy systems. Expanding the applications of AI technology across the power and energy sector will assist better control and management of energy consumption, anticipating network malfunctions, or even optimization. It is expected that this Research Topic will endow the research community with the recent advances in the paradigm of energy system planning and operation.
