Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex systemic autoimmune disease characterized by widespread immunologic abnormalities and multisystem inflammation with the generation of autoantibodies. SLE represents a major burden for society and may constitute serious, sometimes incapacitating health problems at the level of the individual patient.

Up to date, the disease etiology of SLE is complex and remains obscure, but it appears that the interactions of predisposing factors (genetic and epigenetic factors) and trigger factors (pathogens, infection, environmental factors) are considered to contribute to the development of disease. Due to the complex laboratory findings, heterogeneous manifestations of SLE, it is still of great challenge for physicians to make the diagnosis and evaluation of disease course. Although disease biomarkers of SLE have been well-documented in the past two decades, it is always important to discover novel specific biomarkers to help stratify patients, signal resistance, and predict relapse. Understanding why some patients respond to therapies while others do not is also critical to accelerating clinical trials and developing better treatments.

The aim of this Research Topic is to bring together original research and review articles devoted to discovering the novel disease biomarkers and identifying the potential therapeutic targets for lupus. We welcome submissions considering new ideas for the diagnosis and treatment of SLE. Research can include immunological/molecular studies that focus on the role of single-cell sequence, extracellular vesicles, and new lupus-specific epigenetic, metabolomic, or protein biomarkers.

Cellular compartments and pathways in the pathogenic regulation of lupus

Innate and adaptive immunity in immunological mechanisms of lupus

Role of epigenetic, metabolomic, or protein biomarkers in lupus

Role of single-cell sequence and extracellular vesicles in the pathogenesis of lupus

Advances in immunological and molecular biomarkers of lupus

Immunomodulatory drugs investigation of lupus

Therapeutic strategies based on the immune system for treating lupus
