Industry 4.0 already moved robots from isolated to cooperative contexts in industrial settings, but the upcoming Society 5.0 comes with a new paradigm, in which people and artificial beings cooperate in daily life routines. These new robots have not only to be autonomous and adaptive, they also need to be aware of social cues to cooperate with people in unstructured settings, maximizing adherence through behaving in a socially adequate way.

Socially-aware Robotics is an emergent area of research that seeks to understand how robots can become aware of their social context and use this capability to behave as more accessible, accepted, and useful devices. These new robots should not only be able to sense their environment and, especially, the people that populate it. They should also incorporate prediction and self-adaptation components that allow them to anticipate the consequences of incoming events and modify their behavior according to them.

This research topic will provide a complete set of state-of-the-art solutions and research devoted to incorporating social awareness in robots working in a wide range of application domains such as education, telepresence, monitoring, security, assistance, caregiving, or small retail automation. The main goal for the topic is to explore mechanisms designed to help maximize adherence of the users to robotic agents, with social awareness considered as the key feature to achieve this goal. While another Research Topic may focus on the technical feasibility of the proposed solutions, the proposed topic is strongly related to acceptability, utility, and accessibility analysis of the performance of social robots. Hence, it will focus attention on user-centered design approaches, user experience evaluation processes, long-term experimentation, and standards for social and service robots. Technically, the contributions to this topic are expected to be diverse, but they should all be related to improve adherence to the robot in a social context via solid and thorough experiments conducted in relevant settings. They will explore social awareness, offering cutting edge, adequately tested improvements for robot cognitive architectures regarding self-adaptation, personalized human-robot interaction, planning or navigation, among others.

This research topic is devoted to publishing cutting-edge research that explores the mechanisms endowed in new generation robots to make them behave adequately in a social context.

We encourage submissions of detailed deep analysis of specific methods, engineering solutions, and multidisciplinary adherence analysis for implemented solutions, including experiment design and datasets aiming towards providing a reproducible and reliable testing context for socially aware robots. Contributions should pay special attention to the user perspective in the design and analysis of results. The topics include, but are not limited to:
