Over the past decade, several significant advances in chemical engineering and nanotechnology have led to the advent of a wide range of functional nanomaterials and nanostructured devices devoted to biomedical applications. As a result, the field of medicine is witnessing a paradigm shift, with such developments paving the way for a new generation of diagnostics and therapeutic options exhibiting unprecedented performance.

This Research Topic welcomes original research articles, perspectives, and reviews addressing the latest advances on relevant topics related to the content described above. It calls for contributions pertaining to nanomaterials and nanodevices for application in both life and environmental sciences. Particular attention will be placed on developments addressing high precision medicine and sensing, in which photonics acts as the key enabling tool.

Contributions on the following topics will be particularly encouraged, but are not limited to:
-smart nanomaterials exhibiting important optical properties for application in biophotonics
-nanodevices and nanodevice-based microsystems for application in both life and environmental sciences
-device and system technologies for (nano)bio-imaging and microscopy
-chemical, biochemical, and physical (nano)sensors
-nanotechnology powered lab-on-chip devices
-nanomaterial-mediated optogenetics
-nanomaterial-enabled optofluidics
-nano-photonic image sensors
-correlative techniques and methods for in-depth characterization of smart nanomaterials and nanodevices
