Pharmaceutical research specifically in a commercial context currently witnesses a shift from pursuing “magic bullets” (i.e. a single target) to seeking multi-compound combination treatments. This shift provides an opportunity to discover new treatment modalities from Herbal Medicines (HMs). HMs multi-being component drugs possess generally possess an interesting spectrum of pharmacological activities. However, the complexities in therapeutic philosophy and chemical composition of HMs are currently an obstacle for the progression of HMs for novel-drug discovery. Furthermore, conventional research methods are incapable of efficiently elucidating the therapeutic potential of HMs and identifying their functional compounds.

Lipidomics/ metabolomics can confer a complete atlas of metabolic landscape, offering critical clues to understand pathological stimuli and drug treatments. Beyond that, systems-level investigation of the lipidome or metabolome complies with the holistic and systematic feature of HMs, enabling comprehensive metabolic network analysis to identify critical metabolic drivers who are central to disease pathology and HMs treatment.
Integration of lipidomics/metabolomics data with disease phenotypes is an emerging approach to unravel bioactivity evaluation and action mechanism of HMs and their functional compounds. We aim to highlight the values of lipidomics and metabolomics in addressing the systems pharmacology, compatibility mechanism of Herbal Medicine, and discovering the bioactive compounds from Herbal Medicine.

This Research Topic aims to collect reviews and original research articles on the following topics, but not limited to:
• Application of functional lipidomics/ metabolomics to elucidate the pharmacological mechanism of a novel pharmaceutical ingredient or herbal extracts
• Comprehensive lipidomics/metabolomics analysis to elucidate compatibility mechanism of herbal medicine
• Application of lipidomics/metabolomics for discovery of bioactive compounds deriving from herbal medicine
• New analytical strategies or approaches in lipidomics/metabolomics for herbal medicine-specific study

Keywords: herbal medicines, Functional Lipidomics, Functional Metabolomics, Pharmacological efficiency, drug targets, bioactive compounds
