There is increasing emphasis across surgical specialties on sound education and a growing recognition that education is key to safe clinical practice and effective professional development, however surgery presents unique opportunities and challenges to educators and trainers. Here, we discuss methods and approaches to the education of surgical students, residents, and fellows, as well as practicing surgeons and this topic will act as a resource for principal investigators, lab managers, supervisors, educators, researchers, and the wider community within surgery for the education and training of surgeons.

This Research Topic addresses the wide range of research covering surgical education at the undergraduate and the postgraduate level. We welcome manuscripts that especially help to highlight new trends in curricular development and digital innovations in medical education including simulation-based training as well as Virtual and Augmented Reality to open new perspectives in surgical education.

We welcome contributions in the form of original research, review, mini review, case report, hypothesis and theory, perspective, and experimental studies that cover, but are not limited to, following themes:
• Curricular Development
• Virtual Reality and Simulation-based Training
• Competence-based Learning
• Learning in an interprofessional context
• Innovative Examination and Assessment Procedures
