About this Research Topic
This Research Topic aims to explore and evaluate the complex dynamics of the relationship between Sport as an economic, cultural and political actor and its impact on sports policy with a focus on the exercise of power. It is rooted in concepts of ' Soft Power'.
The Research Topic 'Sport, Power and Policies' invites contributors to consider the complex relationships between Sport, the exercise of 'Soft Power' and the impact on government policies in a contemporary context, although historical perspectives and case studies will also be considered. The research aims to take a fresh look at this seminal concept from the mid-1990s in the light of the changing geopolitical landscape. We hope to draw in contributions from a range of sports, including football, cricket, rugby league, rugby union, athletics et al.
The Research Topic seeks a particular focus on recent or upcoming sporting mega-events, including The Russia World Cup 2018, The Beijing Winter Olympics 2022, The Rugby Union Japan World Cup 2019, The Qatar World Cup 2022, The Tokyo Olympics 2020 and others. A key question is to test the theories and practice of ' Soft Power ‘and its application in contemporary mega-events. Contributors may also wish to submit articles based on Globalisation, Identity, Sports washing, Pandemic and Post Pandemic Sports Policies, Governance and Regulation, drawing upon current debates and theoretical notions. There is scope for the examination of Sport, Power and Policies at regional and local levels; we hope to encourage original submissions and case studies from a wide range of sports, and a diversity of regions and localities.
Proposals are welcome from, but not limited to, submissions from the following areas:
