The recently published IPCC report has firmly attributed the observed warming of Earth’s surfaces to human activities. The report projected alarming increases in future global mean temperature causing rise in sea levels, and increasing in the frequency of heat waves. This is a wakeup call for governments and other stakeholders across the globe. In the context of the Paris Agreement and the 2021 Glasgow climate conference (COP 26), many advanced economies have already announced their commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Some countries including China have committed to net zero by 2060 and recently India announced its net zero target by 2070. The transition towards net-zero emissions can potentially be particularly challenging for developing economies: there is little leeway for trade-offs between economic growth and emission reductions, and policies to offset impacts falling on particular socio-economic groups may be difficult to implement.

Ambitious climate action like net-zero emission targets is argued by many as critical to meet the temperature targets of the Paris Agreement. Many countries have already committed and pressure is building on others to commit. Its feasibility, its impact on sustainability in developing countries necessitates comprehensive assessment benefiting policymakers as well as researchers. Though a lot of work is underway in this area there is little literature in developing countries context. A Research Topic on ‘Socio-economic impacts of net zero emissions in developing economies’ will offer a platform to serious researchers to bring out their work into public domain, which will help trigger a process for further research to meet deficit in rigorous analysis in this vital area. Manuscripts on the following themes (but not limited to) would be of interest to the collection:
• The feasibility of net zero emissions in developing country context
• Net zero emissions, financial aid and transfer of technology to developing coun-tries
• Impact on poverty on the pathway towards net zero emissions
• Impact on household income distribution
• Impact on vulnerable socio-economic groups
• Impact on quality and extent of employment
• Impact on per capita GDP

Keywords: Net Zero, Developing Countries, Poverty, inequality, climate justice, socio-economic
