Neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, migraine, depression, stroke, and neurodevelopmental disorders such as schizophrenia or autism spectrum disorders account for one-third of the burden of all diseases in the wealthy part of the world. These represent one of the biggest challenges for National Health Systems in terms of economic costs. For instance, it has been estimated that in 2004, 127 million European citizens were living with a brain disorder, for a total annual cost of 385 billion euros. Unfortunately, for most brain disorders, we are still missing effective therapies because since many years we are facing the unmet need of defining the key molecular underpinnings of disease. However, it is clear that the integration of data deriving from basic and clinical research studies is pivotal for a better comprehension of the biological basis of brain disorders and for the identification of novel therapeutic targets to develop innovative pharmacological approaches.

This Research Topic aims at integrating basic and clinical research reports, reviews or viewpoints presenting novel mechanisms involved in acute and chronic brain disorders, highlighting the identification of innovative therapeutic targets or discussing gaps and controversies related to experimental models or therapeutic management of brain disorders.

This Research Topic will collect full research reports, review articles, meta-analyses or viewpoints. Studies examining all levels of inquiry, from basic to applied or clinical science and also methodological papers using a wide range of techniques and model systems, are welcome.

Keywords: Neurological disorders, mental disorders, neuodevelopmental disorders, mood disorders, acute brain injury disorders. molecular mechanisms of disease, novel therapeutic targets, disease biomarkers

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements.
