Natural Language Processing (NLP) and linguistics can provide insights into the real-time public reaction to events, identified within human commentary, for example, the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022. In today’s world, the sheer volume of unstructured text data we generate on a daily basis makes Natural Language Processing (NLP) even more significant. Named entity recognition, sentiment analysis, machine translation, topic modeling, and text summarization are some of the most prevalent and prominent NLP approaches being used to interpret human discourses.

This Research Topic is interested in how applied linguistics and NLP were used to successfully implement the technology for communication, translation for multicultural and multilingual people, and commentary in the games and other mega-events. In addition, Beijing Olympics (BO) 2022 public sentiment analysis for social media impact and classification have been selected as key dimensions for coverage in this Research Topic. The purpose is to understand the response to events across the globe to determine cultural similarities and differences in sentiment and emotions. NLP and linguistic researchers can make a vital contribution by accessing information on a wide range of related topics, including COVID’s global and regional distribution and the socioeconomic impact of the event as well as the development of the games.
