Frontiers in Toxicology is pleased to introduce the collection Model Organisms in Toxicology.

Model organisms represent an invaluable resource for fundamental and applied research, allowing prediction studies, modelling, and the identification of action mechanisms. This article collection will showcase studies of Model Organisms that have significance to the field of Toxicology as a whole.

Classically used for biomedical studies, model organisms are progressively entering many disciplines within the Toxicology field. Drosophila melanogaster, Danio rerio and Caenorhabditis elegans are just some of the model organisms that have been used to elucidate the adverse effects of toxins and the environment can have on healthy development, the brain and nervous system. The results obtained from their study are essential to the progress of the field by providing a non-human alternative.

Our goal is the help highlight the importance of the different model organisms and to publish research looking in to the translatability of their results.

For this Research Topic, we are looking for submissions covering, but not limited to:

• Advantages and disadvantages of the different model organisms in the field
• How to select the appropriate model organism
• Their use to improve research to human physiology or pathology
• Translatability of study results and real world applicability
• Studies using model organisms and the new advances the results are bringing
