Basketball is a team sport with the primary objective of scoring points by putting the ball inside the basket and preventing the opposing team from doing the same. Since its creation in the USA in 1891, basketball has evolved to become one of the world’s most popular and widely viewed sports. Basketball attracts crowds at the professional (e.g., NBA, WNBA, FIBA), intercollegiate (e.g., NCAA Women's and Men's Divisions), and amateur levels with crowds packing courts to watch pick-up games worldwide. As the game becomes increasingly globalized, it has become an important hub / matrix for a broad variety of cultural influences (e.g. music, fashion, social networking). It is also shaped by its relationship with the communities with which it intersects (e.g. gender, race, ethnicity, politics, and educational systems). As a result, research around basketball has grown, with a significantly high number of articles and citations in existing empirical literature (including, quantitative, qualitative, case studies, historical methods, critical studies, and other relevant social scientific methodologies).

With the sport continuing to grow in popularity, however, further research is needed in order to understand the sport’s influence on today’s environment and society.

The aim of this Research Topic is to build on the existing social scientific literature on basketball and further explore its culture, sociology, management and events. Specifically, we welcome papers that address:
- Governance of basketball organisations
- The relationship between basketball and society
- The portrayal of basketball in media
- Analysis of race, ethnicity, class, gender, in basketball (including intersectional studies)
- Marketing and management in basketball
- Basketball’s environmental impact, especially through mega-events
- The history or culture of basketball
- Research on basketball as a recreational or developmental activity (including youth and adult recreational levels)
- Basketball as a diplomatic tool
- Critical studies of basketball
- Politics in basketball
- Spectator and fan dynamics in basketball

Keywords: basketball, culture, sociology, history, management, marketing, tourism, events
