The growing demand for green, sustainable, and environmentally friendly materials has made the development of renewable and natural resources a major focus of the research community. Biopolymers (e.g., cellulose, chitin, lignin, proteins, etc.) have established themselves as one of the most promising candidates for constructing various functional materials, which have found a wealth of potential applications in energy, healthcare and environmental sectors. It is worth noting that their industrial uses strongly depend on the raw materials, synthesis routes, and the physical and chemical versatilities of the resultant materials, which can be readily modified and shaped in various forms.

Gaining an in-depth understanding of the fundamental structural parameters of such polymers is a crucial step to construct materials with on-demand functionalities. Developing simple and effective fabrication approaches contributes to the early industrialization of functional materials derived from biopolymers. At the same time, exploring the emerging applications of biopolymer-based functional materials, especially those dedicated to solving some of our energy, health, and environmental issues, helps to shape a more sustainable future.

This Research Topic aims to highlight the recent advances in the development of biopolymer-based functional materials and their related applications in health, energy and environment. Potential topics include but are not limited to:
• Synthesis and characterization of natural biopolymers and their derivatives;
• Advanced manufacturing of biopolymers and biopolymers-derived functional materials;
• Biopolymer-based functional materials for advanced energy storage/conversion devices;
• Biopolymer-based functional materials for healthcare applications;
• Biopolymer-based functional materials for environmental applications.
