Medical devices present a huge opportunity to address various healthcare challenges in Africa, including but not limited to Malaria, Tuberculosis, high maternal and child mortality, HIV/AIDS and the growing increase in Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). To address some of these challenges, there is a growing number of medical device innovators in Africa and an increasing number of biomedical engineers and researchers on the continent and inter-continental collaborations. These have researched, innovated and tested several medical devices, technologies and systems, some of which have passed through all the design and testing stages to reach the market and save lives. More evidence is required to show the increasing trend and disparities, if any, in line with medical device innovations and their clinical trials in Africa.
This Research Topic aims to bring together a collection of papers that document medical innovations, systems and clinical trials in Africa in addressing the various healthcare challenges regionally and globally. In so doing, more evidence will be provided towards possible collaborations, gaps and opportunities for improving the healthcare technology landscape in Africa.
