The need for science led policy, regulation and legislation has become increasingly important across biotechnology and bioengineering fields to encourage safe, sustainable and efficient innovation in and growth of the industry. This policy and regulation are particularly important for risk assessment and management in areas such as bioengineered crops and livestock, biopharmaceuticals, bioengineered enzymes, cells and tissues and for environmental protection. New applications for release into unmanaged environments will also require the development of appropriate regulatory policies. Across academia and industry, stakeholders must ensure compliance with new legislation, regulatory frameworks and policies, particularly in terms of potential biosafety implications. Policy and legislation must also be continually updated to reflect the latest scientific advances, while regulatory frameworks that ensure efficient, safe and sustainable developments are required for continuous progress across bioengineering and biotechnology fields.

This Research Topic focuses on policy, legislation and regulatory guidelines across the fields of bioengineering and biotechnology and highlights how these can be used by regulatory and decision-making bodies to ensure safe, sustainable and efficient developments. The collection will highlight and evaluate policy-related issues, provide policy options and actionable recommendations on legislation across all fields of bioengineering and biotechnology with the ultimate aim of informing and updating stakeholders.

This Research Topic welcomes Policy & Practice Reviews, Opinion Articles, Mini Reviews, Perspective Articles and Review Articles that provide a comprehensive overview of current and relevant topics related to policy, regulation and guidelines across various fields of bioengineering and biotechnology. Themes to be covered include:

• assessment of biological hazards and biosafety risks in academia and industry

• approval procedures and entry to market requirements for new biotechnologies and products to encourage sustainable and safe innovation

• new developments in international, national and local legislation, plans and policies

• regulatory compliance and considerations for stakeholders across private and public sectors

Keywords: policy, Regulation, Bioengineering and Biotechnology, biorisk, organ
