Functional polymer composites are widespread and non-fungible in plentiful applications. By rational incorporating of functional filler with ingenious methods, electrical, thermal, mechanical, and anisotropic properties of composites can be significant enhanced by manipulating filler orientation or distribution. Considering the practical application, ideal approaches to manufacturing functional polymer composites with assembled fillers or other rational composite architecture design must meet the requirements of low cost, high compatibility and ease of scale-up. Many novel manufacturing methods, such as external fields assisted processing, external force induced assembling, additive manufacturing, have attracted lots of attention in both industry and academic area.

This Research Topic aims to highlight novel processing and fabrication methods of functional polymer composites, including external field assisted processing, additive manufacturing, external force (solution casting, spinning, blowing) induced assembling and other cutting-edge approaches.

Novel manufacturing methods offer a couple of advantages for intelligent fabrication, automation, Low carbon and environmental protection, fast microstructure forming, and designability of functional polymer composites. By applying subtly processing methods and rational design of composite structures, conventional polymer can be endowed with multi-functionalities, including electric, optical, thermal and mechanical properties, in an efficient way. This Research Topic welcomes submissions of the following article types: Correction, Editorial, Mini Review, Original Research, Perspective, Review.

Contributed articles are expected in the following research fields (not limited):

• Hybrid manufacturing – Additive, external field assisted, traditional or other combinations;

• Emerging functional materials, techniques, and applications in polymer composites manufacturing.
