Individuals with special healthcare needs (SHCN) have behavioral, mental, physical, emotional, and chronic conditions. In many cases, this condition has a significant effect on oral health. They usually influence how patients receive oral health care. Dentists often have to tailor dental care to the individual needs of a patient with SHCN.
Individuals with SHCN usually have more oral health problems than the general population. Several factors contribute to poor oral health in these individuals. These include oral conditions, physical limitations, medications, and difficulty brushing and chewing. Children with SHCN have a greater risk of developing health complications. Fortunately, medical practitioners can identify at-risk patients at an early stage, and these children need to be referred to a pediatric dentist for appropriate treatment. Proper oral care is very important for a child's overall health. In addition, good nutrition for the body and the mouth is no exception for children with SHCN. This research topic is intended to get the latest updates in the field of dental and oral care for children with SHCN.
Dentists must always be able to follow developments that occur in both the diagnosis of disorders related to their special needs, as well as the interventions and management of the oral manifestations of these individuals.
This Research Topic aims to focus on advances in dentistry for children with SHCN, and the areas to be considered for submission are:
• Caries risk assessment, diagnostic tools and management strategies
• Evidence-based in special care dentistry
• Interesting, innovative concepts, techniques or initial research results
• Interventions to prevent or reduce disease progression in children with SHCN
• Experience sharing clinical practice papers
• Public health and community-based approaches to optimizing oral health problems in children with SHCN
• Recent advances or trends in pediatric dentistry procedures and materials used for SHCN
• Recent trends in pediatric dentistry
We welcome the submission of the following papers:
• Systematic reviews with/without meta-analysis
• Narrative review, mini previews, and scoping review
• Original research
• Case reports
• Brief reports and short communications with children
