About this Research Topic
Vertigo/dizziness is one of the most common symptoms of posterior circulation stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). This type of vertigo/dizziness has a typical acute onset and may occur as a transient event or may have a prolonged course with recurring episodes of spontaneous vertigo/dizziness. The vascular origin of these events is often not recognized in Emergency Rooms (ERs), or confused with other acute vestibular syndromes, which is why the interest of the scientific community on this topic has markedly increased. Often, patients with recurrent TIA-associated dizziness are seen in the clinic, not at the emergency room, which can increase the difficulty in recognizing these ischemic events. Furthermore, balance disturbances can also be a manifestation of stroke sequelae mainly in the cerebellum and cerebral trunk.
This Research Topic will contribute scientific knowledge on how to prevent, recognize, and manage balance disorders resulting from cerebrovascular diseases. Our goal is to spotlight innovative findings and raise discussion around the clinical assessment, prophylaxis, and primary or secondary prevention of acute posterior circulation stroke. We also aim at showcasing new data that will improve the understanding and management of balance disorders resulting from vertebrobasilar stroke, including data on rehabilitation options, home care strategies, changes in quality of life, risks of falls, loss of productivity and other balance complications, both in acute and chronic post-stroke phases.
We welcome the submission of different types of manuscripts (Original Research articles, Reviews etc.) that focus on, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Innovative diagnostic methods for vascular vertigo/dizziness
- Primary and secondary prevention in vertebrobasilar (VB) TIA/stroke, including the role of risk factor control and pharmacological and non-pharmacological preventive measures
- Management of VB-TIA/stroke patients at the Emergency Room
- Management of VB-TIA/stroke outpatients
- Balance evaluation, eyes movement assessment, or inner ear electrophysiological findings in TIA/stroke patients
- New guidelines or comments regarding the current guidelines for the prevention of stroke or for management of vascular vertigo/dizziness patient
- Balance rehabilitation in stroke patients
- Innovations in home health care and falls prevention in TIA/stroke patients
