Immersive Analytics is concerned with the design and evaluation of interactive interfaces in the next-generation display and interaction platforms (e.g., virtual and augmented reality, or VR/AR) to support data analysis and decision making. The research field rises with the recent commercialization of immersive mixed reality technologies, especially the high-quality and publicly-affordable VR/AR head-mounted displays, which present new possibilities to support interactive analytic reasoning beyond the limitations of the traditional desktop, mobile, and touchscreen devices. With a series of successful workshops starting in 2016 engaging with multiple research communities (VIS, HCI, and VR/AR), Immersive Analytics is now a more well-defined topic than ever. Various novel visualization and interaction techniques have been developed. However, there are still many unexplored problems and hurdles that make it challenging to incorporate the newly developed technologies into real-world workflows.

This Research Topic will include papers on different topics related to Immersive Analytics. The authors are welcome to keep contributing novel visualization and interaction techniques and investigating human factors in immersive environments. This Research Topic especially encourages papers about less explored problems in Immersive Analytics, e.g., comparing immersive vs. non-immersive platforms for analytic purposes, collaborative visual analytics in immersive environments, new metrics for evaluation, and VR/AR for high-level analytic tasks (e.g., sensemaking). This Research Topic also invites discussions about the hurdles in immersive analytics adoption and solutions or prototypes to address them.

The type of contributions can include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Novel visualization and interaction techniques in immersive environments

- Empirical studies related to immersive analytics

- Data physicalization

- Authoring immersive data visualization

- Immersive Analytics adoption challenges

- Immersive sensemaking

- Collaborative Immersive Analytics

- AI for Immersive Analytics

- Immersive applications

- Immersive Analytics research and evaluation methodologies

Keywords: Augmented reality, Human-computer interaction, Human factor, Data visualization, Data physicalization, Visual analytics, Data Analytics, Interaction, User interface, Direct manipulation, Display, Haptics, Input, Virtual reality, Visualization, Mixed reality

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
