Neurodegenerative diseases are devastating and afflict a large portion of the aging population. A common feature of most neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and Huntington’s disease (HD) is the deposition and aggregation of misfolded protein within the cytoplasm of neurons. Our aging populations will see ever-increasing morbidity of neurodegenerative disorders over the coming decades, with an imminent rapid escalation in both human suffering, public health burden, and global economic burden.

Most neurodegenerative diseases lack effective treatments available at present. Therefore, there is an urgent need to deeper understand the underlying pathogenic processes and to discover new, safe and effective drug candidates and treatment strategies that can help prevent and cure AD. Natural products, defined as the bioactive molecules naturally synthesized by a living organism, have undoubtedly been one of the historically important bioresources of bioactive chemicals for the discovery and development of pharmaceutical molecules. This research topic aims to explore the positive effects of natural phytocomponents as bioactive molecules against age-related neurodegenerative diseases and to investigate the underlying mechanisms, thus contributing to the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

The scope of this Research Topic includes but is not limited to:

1. The pathogenesis mechanism research of age-related neurodegenerative diseases.

2. The positive effects of new natural phytocomponents as bioactive molecules against age-related neurodegenerative diseases.

3. Systematic exploration of the molecular targets and mechanisms of how bioactive compounds against age-related neurodegenerative diseases.

4. Structure-function properties of natural bioactive compounds with neuroprotective effects

5. Absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) study of natural bioactive compounds in vivo.

6. The synergistic analysis and potential mechanism research of different bioactive compounds used in combination in affecting age-related neurodegenerative diseases.

We welcome all Original Research articles, Clinical Trials, and Systematic Reviews.
