About this Research Topic
Understanding the fundamental processes that regulate the genesis and the dynamics of georesources, is crucial in order to define innovative strategies to explore and exploit them. The current, both economic and environmental situation rises the demand for renewable and clean energy resources to reduce, significantly, our dependence on fossil fuels. In this regards, natural resources, such as geothermal energy and raw materials, are being established as the main objectives of scientific and technological research.
Geothermal fields or ore deposits of high economic interest (gold, silver, REE) are mainly hosted in volcanic terrains. Despite geothermal resources and ore deposits associated to volcanic systems have the potential for sustainable development of modern society, the current lack of knowledge prevents to fully exploit them. It is advisable to concentrate efforts in research on the evolution and dynamics of these natural systems and their relationship with the associated resources to provide a solid scientific framework for defining strategies toward a sustainable and environmental-friendly use of georesources and for addressing fundamental questions: Which is the essential knowledge on volcanic systems and novel methodologies that scientists and industry require for a cost-efficient exploration and exploitation of natural resources in volcanic areas? Which are the key factors controlling the formation and longevity of geothermal fields and ore deposits in volcanic environments?
In the frame of this Frontiers Research Topic, we aim to promote interdisciplinary and cross-boundary contributions related to the state-of-the-art and novel research concerning the current knowledge on georesources in volcanic areas. We also welcome those contributions presenting new and innovative techniques applied to image internal structures, numerical approaches to progress in the integration of geological, geochemical and geophysical 3D modelling, and methodologies to determine the distribution and productivity of ore deposits. Finally, contributions related to potential hazard and environmental impact of geothermal and ore deposit exploitation are also encouraged. This Frontiers Research Topic should help defining a future roadmap to be followed by scientist and industrial partners addressed to improve our knowledge of the dynamics of volcanic systems and the associated natural resources and promote technological development addressed to improve exploration capacities in order to carry out a cost-effective exploitation of georesources in volcanic environments. Industrial stakeholders will definitively benefit from any advance in this research topic by potentially improving the success and accuracy of the exploration phase and providing strategies for a safe and sustainable management of georesources in the exploitation phase.
